Although it was Friday the 13th we both can agree it was a really good day. Why? Yesterday was the big opening of Atelier des Lumières dedicated to immersive digital exhibitions. Located in a former foundry in the 11th arrondissement this new digital art centre offers a completely innovative experience, thanks to which we can ‘feel’ the art on our own skin and have an impression to be a part of it.
Once entered the exhibition room you are surrounded by colours, lights and sounds. The images of pieces of art are growing and falling apart simultaneously. The floor, the walls and the cellar make altogether the scene of this breathtaking spectacle. Everything changes so fast that you wish you could have a second pair of eyes to absorb even more of it. You feel more like in some sort of psychedelic trip or crazy dream than an actual art gallery.
But then you realise, it’s not magic, it’s technology. Behind all of it, there are over 3000 images and 140 video projectors and the actual room is nothing but an industrial architecture marked by the metallic structure and the presence of elements that are characteristic of the old foundry: a tall brick chimney, a pool, a tank, and a storeroom.
For now on, there are 3 different exhibitions that last together 40 minutes. First one and the longest is dedicated to the creator of the Art Nouveau, Gustav Klimt. Even if it is 100th anniversary of his death, his painting is still alive and famous around the globe. In Atelier des Lumières we discover his artwork accompanied by classical music. The touches of gold, the portraits of women and ornaments in the digital version are like taken out from a Lynch movie.
The second projection is all about the modern inheritor of the Viennese Art Nouveau, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Although he was mostly known for his building designs, the projection of his painting on the big screens can really take you to Alice’s Wonderland or Land of OZ.
The third and the last of exhibitions is completely different than others. It’s a sort of anthem to the Artificial Intelligence used in the process of visual creation. The forms, lights and movements are generated by the algorithm which is used to make a unique digital piece of art. Thanks to Poetic_Ai you will be taken to another universe in which the reality is taken into pieces and gives you vertigo!
One thing is sure, you shouldn’t skip a visit in Atelier des Lumières while in Paris! It will leave you speechless and perhaps you won’t be able to find any words to describe this digital artistic experience.
